Who is AMFI

The Association for Microfinance Institutions (AMFI) is a member-based organization that was established and registered in 1999 under the societies Act, with the aim to build the capacity of the Kenyan Microfinance Industry. Since its inception AMFI-K has continued to play a major role in the development of the industry with a broad mandate of promoting a conducive environment for the development of MFIs, clients and the business environment.

The membership of AMFI-K is varied but focuses on institutions which provide micro finance services to the lower pyramid of the society.

  • Commercial Banks which focus on microfinance.
  • Credit only Microfinance InstitutionsMicrofinance Banks.
  • Wholesale Microfinance Lenders.
  • Developmental institutions.
  • Insurance companies (micro-insurance).
  • SACCOS.

Vision

To be the network of choice that promote a conducive environment for micro finance providers in Kenya.

Mission

To champion the aspirations of micro finance institutions through advocacy, capacity building, linkages and research.

Strategic Objectives

  • To enhance collective action by MFIs and other stakeholders for a conducive policy and regulatory environment for microfinance in Kenya;
  • To strengthen the capacity of MFIs in delivering appropriate and sustainable microfinance services to low income people, through organization and coordination of workshops and training sessions and effective systems for information collection, analysis and dissemination (incl. data bases, print and electronic media);
  • To enhance collaboration, linkages and partnerships between AMFI, its members and other development actors and stakeholders, both locally and internationally,and set standards and increase professionalism in the industry;
  • To strengthen the internal capacity and funding base of AMFI and its Secretariat in providing value-adding services to its members and the industry at large.

Membership

Category 1

Ordinary members comprise of:

  • Deposit Taking Microfinance institutions
  • Credit Only Microfinance institutions
  • Wholesalers
Category 2

Associate members comprise of:

  • Commercial Banks,
  • SACCOS,
  • Insurance companies Organizations established under independent Acts of Parliament and Development organizations
Category 3

Honorary members will essentially of:

  • Ex -official members.

All categories of members with the exception of honorary members have equal voting rights and contribute to the networks funding through annual subscriptions.

Eligibility Criteria

An Institution must:

  • Offer microfinance services to the poor or low-income earners or provide support services to the microfinance industry.
  • Have a clear microfinance business with a minimum of 500 clients and 1 year in operation.
  • Non-discriminate against clients on the basis of religion, ethnicity or political affiliation.
  • Be non‐Partisan
  • Demonstrate management capacity to effectively manage their operations in accordance with internationally accepted principles as evidenced by; Vision/Mission, Governing body, Fit and Proper Test, Corporate Strategy, Quality of Portfolio, IR policy and Business Plan
